Over 70 cultural events to be held in Tampere and 19 other municipalities with funding from Operation Pirkanmaa project

The cultural events will be free and open to all with funding made available by the Operation Pirkanmaa project. Most of the funding will come from Tampere, the biggest city in the region, which will host 42 events, while the 19 other municipalities will each hold one to three events of their choice depending on the number of inhabitants of the municipality and the size of the projects selected.

The development project for the creative industries is the legacy project of the European Capital of Culture application process, and in May it organised an open application round for cultural events. The cultural events organised by professional operators will help to revive the cultural sector that has been decimated by the Covid pandemic and to increase opportunities for residents of the Pirkanmaa region to immerse themselves in culture with a very low threshold in their everyday lives, even in surprising places.

We received 157 applications by the deadline, and the network of heads of cultural affairs of the municipalities involved in Operation Pirkanmaa finally selected 73 projects for implementation. Budgets for the individual projects vary between 1,500 and 9,000 euros, and Operation Pirkanmaa will spend approximately 200,000 euros on implementing them.

The cultural events will take place between August and December. Once the locations and times have been agreed, schedules for the events will be published on the Events Calendar on the Operation Pirkanmaa website which will be continuously updated at

The first events in August to feature dance, circus, and music

Miko Petteri’s Escape Fantasy is a performance, concert, campfire, story hour and collection of ballads by artist Miko Petteri Jaakkola, and it will take place in Sorsapuisto Park and Näsinpuisto Park on 7 August.

In the Full Steam Ahead project, five experienced musicians from Folk Extreme will tour the ports along the route of the steamship Tarjanne on 12-13 August. Folk Extreme will also run a live stream from the tour on its social media channels.

The village fete by Omettan Olotila will be held on 20 August, the day that celebrates art and the countryside, in Teisko, at the old Ylä-Kapee farm. The multidisciplinary art group Säilättäret will perform their debut work The Legend of the Holy Pear in the parks of Tampere on 22-23 August. Their performance combines circus with acrobatics, object manipulation, puppetry, and musical theatre.

The Replicas dance by the artist group fema will be performed at different locations in Tampere. The performance is about our relationship with the sharing and use of public spaces. The event will start on Friday, 26 August at 6pm by Lampipuisto bridge in Ahotie street, in Nekala.

A #arthunt will be organised between 25 August and 11 September in Nokia, Pirkkala and Ylöjärvi where participants will try to search for ceramic sculptures using hints provided by the artists via social media, a little like finding caches in geocaching.
